O , you reader of this article ! please remember those days when you were a lovely baby and your happiness was confined to the lap of your parent only .

Beautiful people loved you and were keen to take you in their arms , but you had fondness only for your parent . You , then , loved to hide your charming face under the garments of your parent .

The Ruler wanted to kiss you , the magistrate was anxious to caress you with affection , but you never cared for them .

You were not even inclined to look at them . As a matter of fact , your only work was to spoil the clothes of the rosy cheeked ones and of the rich persons who fondled you .

You had no respect and consideration even for the highly educated persons . You regarded even the valuable books worthy only of being torn away .

Well , how happy and carefree were you , during those days ? All were enamoured of you . The siblings were ever ready to make any sacrifice for you . You were beloved and dearest to your parents . You were then absolutely unmindful even of your own necessities .

It has been truly said :

" Heaven dwells with us in infancy . "

This is the period , when there is no thinking , either of this or of that . There is neither GOD for you nor Creation , neither mine nor thine , neither good nor evil , and neither manners nor arrogance .

The attractive charms of the beautiful and delicate ones have no fascination for you , and the glamour and the glory of this world are meaningless to you .

Blessed are those who have , like a child , attained freedom from dualism and become Knowledge incarnate , after crossing the hurdles of all the stages , since their childhood . It is aptly said that :

" The purpose of life in the end was the same as it was in the beginning . "

O dear one ! please remember that though these great souls appear to be simple and innocent , they are so fearless as to jump on the chest of GOD Itself .

Like a child , they are not afraid of anybody . They lightly handle even Indra and other gods . Brahman and others are enthusiastically devoted to them .

But mark their indifference ! They do not care to take any notice of them . All the four Vedas sing hymns in their praise .

After some time , the same child shifts one's centre of happiness . Now one takes delight only in toys . Even the dear parent is forgotten , nothing to speak of knowledge , art , wealth , or greatness ; these are meaningless to one .

After a lapse of a few years , one's happiness is centred upon books . Now , one has no enthusiasm for play or games with dolls and toys . One does not care for one's parent , nor for any charming thing nor any tamasha or entertainment .

After one's studies , one gets some employment , and then one's happiness rests upon wealth . Now one does not relish any music other than that of the tinkling of coins . There is no job more important than the accumulation of wealth .

After the accumulation of dead wealth , one gets busy in living up to the pleasure of one's beloved spouse . The money , which was previously dearer to one than anything else , is then sacrificed to please one's better-half .

Now , the seat of happiness is further shifted from wealth to the dear spouse , who becomes all in all to one .

To obey the spouse or to act in submission to the spouse's will , expressed in curtain-exchanges in the loneliness of night , has become the main source of one's enjoyment and happiness .

This is not enough and is not the end . One moves further .

The couple is now anxious to have a baby .

When will they have a baby in their home ? When will they enjoy the pleasure of playing with their own baby ?

One is now consulting the doctors and other well-wishers . The other is also in search of amulets , saints , and priests who may bless them with a baby .

They have wealth , jewelry , land and all the worldly comforts , but they lack only one thing , without which all the pleasures become meaningless .

Eventually , by the grace of GOD , they are blessed with a baby . They are overwhelmed with joy . The baby is the only centre of entertainment in the house , the very life of the family . They cannot endure separation even for a moment .

While working in the office , the baby is , as if , mirrored before the very eyes of the parent . It is the final fruit of their domestic love . The parent does not kiss the child , but licks it like a cow . It is the soul of the soul . It is everything to the parent . The love and affection of the grandparent is beyond description .

In the words of an Indian poet :

" There is no wealth better than progeny .
There is no comfort better than the affection of progeny .
There is no pleasure better than the sacred fruit of love .
There is no smell more pleasant
Other than that of a beautiful rose ( progeny ) .
This ( progeny) has been the only panacea
For centuries for broken hearts .
The progeny is a sweet smelling flower , happiness
And the very soul of a human .
The progeny is the comfort and the mental peace of the parents . "

During adversity of life , progeny is the sweet hope and inspiration . It is like blood in the body , and sight in the eyes . Progeny is also the sustaining strength in old age .
Progeny soothes the heart and acts as a tonic to the parents . It gives strength to them and also peace to their soul . It is the panacea for then .

When the baby grows a little older , it hides its face behind the parent's garment and says to the other parent in a lisping utterance , " Look at me " . These innocent words of the baby win the hearts of the parents and they are exhilarated . For an ordinary worldly person , this is the highest rung of the ladder of happiness . This is a common phenomenon .

If you examine carefully , you will admit that , after this stage , the sun of happiness of a person starts going down , and the child no longer remains the object of merriment for the parents .

The child now needs their guidance . The parents are no more animated at the sight of the child . Now they have to think of education and proper guidance . They have also to administer stern warning from time to time for negligence .

One no more excites spontaneous happiness . One sometimes becomes a cause of their worries . One's welfare becomes the main concern for the parents .

This observation proves that our person has travelled through the journey of happiness and has now reached its top . But we have nothing to do with this person .

We are here to write the life-history of " Happiness " .

How does it change forms ? How , why , where and when did it shift its spheres — behind the garments of the parent , in the toys and games , in the pages of the storybooks , in the accumulation of gold , in the enjoyment of the beloved , in the kisses and embraces of the charming spouse and in the smiling red lips of the loving baby ?

O , Happiness ! Do you really reside in these spheres ? Let us examine this .
